Summer may get most of the attention, but many of us think fall is the best time to experience Nantucket. The crowds begin to thin, the weather stays comfortable well into October, and the island calendar is filled with events that bring locals and visitors together.
From road races and harvest festivals to seafood celebrations and holiday traditions, there’s something happening nearly every weekend. Stay at Seven Sea Street Inn and you’ll be within walking distance of downtown restaurants, unique shops, galleries, and many of the festivities.
Nantucket Project (Dates TBD — typically late September)
Each fall, The Nantucket Project brings nationally recognized speakers, filmmakers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders to the island for a weekend of conversations, presentations, and thought-provoking discussions. Sessions cover everything from innovation and business to the arts, science, and current issues. If you’re looking for an event that’s a little different from the typical festival, this one is worth planning around.
Nantucket Scallopers Ball (October 2, 2026)
On Nantucket, we like to celebrate the opening of the scalloping season with a party. The Nantucket Scallopers Ball, sponsored by the Nantucket Shellfish Association, brings together friends and family for a night of fresh seafood, music, and dancing. A silent auction is one of the highlights of the evening, so get ready to bid on your favorite items. Tickets are limited, so it’s worth planning ahead if your visit coincides with opening weekend of scalloping season.
Nantucket Half Marathon & Batacular Bike Race (October 11 & 25, 2026)
October’s cooler mornings and comfortable afternoons make it one of our favorite times to get outside, and two annual events give visitors even more reason to explore the island.
The Nantucket Half Marathon returns on October 11, 2026, bringing runners from around the country to the island. The course winds through quiet neighborhoods, scenic bike paths, and coastal roads before finishing downtown. Even if you’re not participating, race weekend is a fun time to visit. You’ll find spectators cheering along the course, restaurants filled with post-race celebrations, and plenty of excitement throughout town.
Later in the month, the Batacular Bike Race and Nantucket Conservation Foundation Fall Festival take place on October 25, 2026. Riders explore the trails of the Middle Moors before celebrating at one of our favorite fall traditions. The festival features local food, live music, hayrides, family activities, and demonstrations of Nantucket’s annual cranberry harvest. It’s a great way to experience a different side of the island, whether you’re on a bike or simply enjoying the festivities.
Cobblestones (October 9–12, 2026)
Indigenous Peoples’ Weekend is one of our favorite times to explore downtown Nantucket. Cobblestones invites visitors and locals to shop small while discovering the island’s unique boutiques, galleries, and specialty shops. Many businesses offer special promotions throughout the weekend.
Spend the afternoon wandering Nantucket’s cobblestone streets. Stop for lunch at a local café. Browse the shops, then linger over coffee or dessert. The slower pace makes it easy to enjoy downtown without the summer crowds.
From Seven Sea Street Inn, you can walk to the shops, restaurants, and many of the weekend’s activities. It’s one of our favorite fall weekends to experience Nantucket like a local.
Thanksgiving & the Cold Turkey Plunge (November 26, 2026)
Brave the ice-cold waters of Nantucket Harbor off Children’s Beach on Thanksgiving morning for an Arctic awakening to your holiday festivities. Join hundreds of swimmers who take the plunge, nicknamed “freezing for a reason,” at 10:00 AM. Register online. Proceeds benefit the Weezie Library for Children. Even if you prefer to stay dry, it’s a fun tradition to watch before enjoying Thanksgiving dinner.

Fall is one of our favorite seasons on Nantucket. The weather stays comfortable, the crowds become smaller, and the island settles into a relaxed pace. It’s the perfect time to enjoy seasonal events, scenic walks, and quiet afternoons exploring downtown.
